Concept design

Concept Design

Why concept design works.

A concept allows us to take in a broad view of things. Take the concept of fruit for example. Fruit has many characteristics. First off there are many different general types of fruit.
You can break these types of fruit down into shape, form, and color. This is just the visual reference. Fruit also appeals to your other senses. They each smell different, they feel different. You might associate fruit with your memories, going blackberry picking in the mountains.... or making fruit pie's with your grandmother. In design it
is important to start out with a general concept such as this because it allows you to explore things you would have never imagined doing. Making things very broad in the beginning gives you the opportunity to be extremely creative, especially within a group of people. If you have a group of designers trying to design something happy as opposed to something to do with the victorian era, the designers trying to make happy designs are not going to be very successful or "happy" themselves.

Because a concept brings in elements of an unpredictable nature the outcome of this process is always much more interesting. When you have a series of parameters that need to be met in context of a concept your resolution will take on a form that is unexpected.

The most important thing a concept truly does is to uncover alternate solutions for design problems, in both an artistic and engineering sense.

A concept is like a species. There are so many interacting counterparts that make up its essence it cannot ever be completely defined as one thing. That is why a concept is so attractive. A concept is more like something you can wear just for a little while, but you can never own it. A concept cannot be bought, it forms on its own and if we are paying enough attention to the world around us we will notice it.

A concept enables designers to unite as one in their vision. Without it all direction and inspiration is lost.

CSS vs HTML

CSS vs HTML

There are those that are attached to the old way of doing things, and don't want to let go of their simple html roots, then there are those that evolve with the change.

If  you are still designing your websites in plain old html you might want to think about the opportunities in design that you are missing out on.  It is generally accepted by many that the only thing CSS is good for is search engines.   CSS makes it is easier for search engines to crawl your page.  While this is true is not the only benefit to using CSS.

Fast download time -
Because of organizational structure, and complex referencing system, users can access the data on your page at an accelerated rate.

More accessible -
CSS is more friendly to hand held devices.  One third of the world owns a wireless device.

Print friendly -
You can specify print instructions in the CSS, so when someone prints off the content on your web page it is laid out in a print user friendly form.

One of the things that I like most about CSS  is its level of specificity.  There are more options concerning space, function, and form.

Organization is another huge benefit.  At least for me, I like to keep things as simple as possible.  When you code your site in straight html, you have a gigantic list of all kinds of commands weaving in and out of each other, its absolute chaos.

CSS allows you to keep everything separated, you can have a layout sheet concerning just the structure of the page, a style sheet regarding things like color and images, and then the separate xhtml sheet that just references everything.  So on the whole you are only observing one specific section of the code.  Instead of trying to view all the code simultaneously, it is sectioned out for you.  So writing and editing code is way easier.

Please give me some feedback, I know for some this is somewhat of a debate, I would love to hear your opinion regardless of what your views are.

thanks all

Spring widgets

What is a widget?

Many people still don't know what  widget is.  It's a pretty simple concept.  It is an interface, usually on the smaller side that you can upload features to.  Kind of like a mini website, like something you would see on an iphone.  You can upload a blog feed, code a little game like tic tac toe, or even have a slideshow of your family.  Now these are not new concepts for websites, but the cool thing about a widget is that you can upload it to any website, sort of like and added feature.  Because there are so many widgets out there that are preset, generally if your just looking for something fun you can find one, and all you have to do is copy the code and paste it onto whatever page you want it on; whether it be your blog, myspace, or even your own website.

I have recently come into contact with this website:
I have to say that I am very impressed with the structure of their widgets!
The exterior design is very clean, not too much going on, with a subtle sheen so as to take on the appearance of metal or glass.  You can also edit the color of this frame to match the content included in the feed, or to match your website design.
- You can choose from a multitude of widgets to include on your webpage like calendars, short quiz's, advertisements for companies, and blog feeds of course.  Below is an example of my widget of a friends blog feed: http://websitedesignnortherncalifornia.com

Another company that has been around for a while longer is widgetbox.com,
they definitely have more widgets to choose from but the look of their widgets from a design standpoint is not as impressive.  The navigation bar on these widgets looks like its straight from the 90's.  So if your at all concerned about the appearance of your design, I would go with springwidgets.com

Tell me about your widget experiences and if you have created anything out of the ordinary please do submit or give me a link!

The Top 10 Premium Specialty Themes for WordPress

The top ten Premium Specialty Themes for Wordpress

According to DESIGNM.AG  these are the top 10 specialty wordpress themes, and by specialty I mean you have to buy them.  I have both wordpress blogs and blogspot blogs.  Aside from the fact that you have to pay for your blog, ie. hosting, when your using wordpress, to the common person it is going to be a lot more difficult to set up.  Whereas blogspot is extremely user friendly.
- But if you are going to be using wordpress then I recommend either learning how to edit the code yourself to make it visually appealing, or purchasing a premium theme, of course you have to buy it, but generally they cost no more than $100.

- Here they are:

Fabulous real estate agent tool.  This theme allows them to add up to date information and show photographs of homes easily and quickly!

This them is very posh, clean, and sophisticated.  This is for video bloggers specifically, so be ready to upload original video content to this theme.   Great for young film students.

Awesome choice for designers.  This blog allows anyone with a portfolio easily update their new projects, and even gives you the ability to create a page about each project so that you can explain the specifics.  Their is a cool java script embedded into the them so that you can have the images of your projects animate by blowing up on the screen for a close up while making the background dark.

This nifty theme allows companies to advertise job openings, and keep them update.

This is a great choice for church's seeing as they don't have much money.  This design enables them to keep their community up to date on their current activities.

Another snazzy video blogging theme!

This theme actually enables you to be able to get your own store up and running without having to go out an buy some crazy shopping cart software that is usually way over priced and low in quality.

This is another e-commerce theme, a little bit more fancy.  The design seems to cater more to the technology industry than the one above.

This sports themed blog is a dream for any man.  You can track any sport or team you deem worthy of your time.

Classipress Text is kind of like craigs list.  It enables you to have classified ads in any genre.

Great news "hard drive"

So I got my computer back a few days ago, and even though the mac people told me that they do not do data recovery an angel in the back did recover most of the hard drive. At least all of the projects that I have been working on, all of my programs are gone, so hopefully genopal and slideshow pro will still allow me to re-upload for no cost just to name a few. What a relief, I was not looking froward to having to spend hours and hours recreating sites from scratch! But I have learned my lesson, and now time machine updates hourly to prevent this from happening again. I love mac, I was definitely a little frustated, but they are awesome all around!

Template Madness

Why the 2 names, I don't get it, confusing.  Anyways, I have been trying to upload a new template, instead of using one of these generic ones, they are boring.  So I uploaded the first one I wanted to try out successfully, but after that I started getting this annoying error message. No other templates would load, including the ones that had worked before.  So now I am stuck with one of these plastic like looking things.  uuugghh, the story of my life.  On top of that all of my widgets don't work anymore, I thought that if I saved the code from the original page and re-uploaded it then it should work.  WRONG, everything was messed up, so don't change your template unless your prepared to loose all your widgets, unless your changing to one of the 20 that you can choose from on the blogger palette.  :)

Leonardo Da Vinci

He is awesome - definitely the person I would most want to meet in the history of mankind, and yes more than jesus! I have his vitruvian man tattooed on my back, it is oh so wonderful!

"Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation... even so does inaction sap the vigour of the mind. "

"It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.'

"
Life is pretty simple: You do some stuff. Most fails. Some works. You do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it. Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else."

"Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence."

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. "

"
The function of muscle is to pull and not to push, except in the case of the genitals and the tongue." (This is definitely entertaining)

"The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions."

"There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see. "

"While I thought that I was learning how to live, I have been learning how to die. "

"Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?"

Hell has come into my life! So yes my mac's hard drive was erased and it totally sucks!!!
I am so pissed. I had alot of projects in the works, that will have to be completely recreated.
There is nothing that I can do about it! I do have a external hard drive, but it had not been updated in a while. I guess I am lucky though that I did not get compltely screwed time wise, I don't have any deadlines coming up that I am not going to be able to meet. But I very surprised at how mac has handled the whole situation, I have not even had the computer for a year, and I requested that the whole computer be replaced, but they would not have it, especially seeing as I use this machine for my work, so this is my livelihood here. I guess I will just have to wait and see if this hard drive problem was an issue with the computer itself, or something external. I will be making sure though to back up my hard drive regularly. I have to say having your hard drive erased off a computer that you use for work is similar in stress to someone dying, I pretty much had a nervous breakdown in the mac store a 2 days ago! AAAHhhhghggg...... Well this wont happen again, to me anyways, and I hope that it never happens to you!

Wow -
Today has been one of those days. Last Friday cox came down to install internet access in our new place. The guy that came was a complete loser, he was having a "bad day." More like he was having a bad life, and probably because he's too lazy too get things done. He basically took off before I could even test it on my computer and claimed that he called the company and that it was up, when in reality their system could not even recognize a connection with this location. I felt so bad for the guy that came today, he came almost 5 hours late, and was definitely the guy that was picking up everybody else's slack. I told him what happened Friday, and he was annoyed, he had to dig a line in the back to lay the cord underground and was sure that was why the other guy didn't do it, I'm sure it happens all the time. Why are people so adamant about getting out of having to do their job, I don't know. Meanwhile I have been waiting for internet access so that I can work on my design projects that require internet access, and I don't work on a laptop because the screens are not big enough. So that second thing that happened was that my computer broke, so then we were on the phone with apple support in Canada for about an hour, pressing all sorts of buttons. Basically the screen was blinking a folder icon with a question mark on it. So after all of that it was found that my computer is unable to communicate with its hard drive, so now we have to go down tomorrow to the apple store and pray that it can be fixed. I am pulling all of my hair our at that point! If I find out that the data is not recoverable, I think I might just have to blow something up! Well thats my vent for the day, hope you enjoy!
